Mid-Year Reflections: Looking Back, Moving Forward

It’s hard to believe we're already halfway through the year.

Every January, I begin the year with ideas, goals, and a vision for what I'd like to create. By July, life has usually added its own plans to the mix. This year has been no different.

As I pause to reflect, I've realized that this year hasn't been defined by checking every box on my to-do list. Instead, it's been a season of learning how to build a creative life that feels sustainable—one that leaves room for family, volunteering, personal growth, and the quiet moments where inspiration often begins.

Looking back, I wouldn't describe the first half of this year as perfect.

I would describe it as meaningful.

Celebrating the Wins

Not every win shows up as a product launch or a finished collection.

Sometimes success looks quieter than that.

This year, I've continued developing my creative voice, sharing my work more intentionally, and learning to trust my own pace instead of comparing it to someone else's.

I've also had the opportunity to invest time in my community through volunteer work, spend meaningful time with my family, and create space for personal growth. Those experiences may not happen inside the studio, but they have shaped me as both an artist and a person.

And that matters.

I've also enjoyed creating and sharing new pattern work—including a recent mini collection that reminded me how much joy I find in designing with curiosity instead of pressure.

Every sketch, every pattern, and every small step continues to build the foundation for the creative business I'm growing.

Lessons I'm Taking Into the Second Half of the Year

If the first six months have taught me anything, it's that creativity isn't a race.

Some seasons are for producing.

Some are for planting.

Others are for resting, observing, and gathering inspiration.

Each one has value.

I've learned that consistency doesn't always mean doing more—it can also mean showing up thoughtfully, even when the pace is slower.

I've also been reminded that creativity grows through everyday life. Conversations, travel, nature, working with others, family memories, and quiet moments away from the computer all become part of the stories I eventually tell through my work.

Instead of asking, "How much did I accomplish?" I'm learning to ask, "Did I create with intention?"

That question feels much more meaningful to me.

Looking Ahead

As summer continues, I'm giving myself permission to keep moving at a pace that feels healthy and sustainable.

Behind the scenes, I'll be continuing to:

  • develop new sketches and pattern ideas

  • refine my portfolio and mockups

  • explore inspiration for future collections

  • share thoughtful updates through my blog, newsletter, and social media

  • prepare for a fresh creative season later this year

I'm especially excited to spend time exploring new ideas that will eventually grow into future collections. Right now, I'm allowing those ideas to develop naturally rather than rushing them.

I believe the best creative work often comes from giving ideas the time they need.

A Simple Reminder

If your year hasn't looked exactly as you imagined back in January, you're not alone.

Progress isn't always measured by how much you've produced.

Sometimes it's measured by how much you've learned, how you've grown, and the life you've lived along the way.

As we step into the second half of the year, I'm choosing to celebrate both the visible accomplishments and the quiet ones.

Thank you for following along on this journey and for being part of this creative community. Your encouragement means more than you know.

Here's to a thoughtful, creative, and inspiring second half of the year.

With gratitude,

Shabya
