Summer in the Studio: Slowing Down With Purpose

Summer looks a little different around here.

With the kids home from school, longer days, family time, and an upcoming season of travel and memory-making, my creative routine naturally shifts this time of year. Instead of pushing for constant output or chasing a packed schedule, I’m choosing something that feels more aligned:

slowing down with purpose.

For me, creativity has never been about rushing or filling every moment with work. Some seasons are for building quickly, and others are for paying attention, gathering inspiration, and allowing ideas room to grow.

This summer, the studio pace will be gentler—but still intentional.

I wanted to share a little of what that looks like behind the scenes.

Inspiration + Sketching

Summer creativity often feels softer and less structured for me.

Instead of heavy production or long design sessions, I’m leaning into inspiration, sketching, and creative observation.

That might look like:

  • collecting visual inspiration

  • noticing colors and textures in everyday life

  • sketching without pressure

  • exploring ideas simply because they spark curiosity

I’ve learned that some of my best ideas arrive when I’m not forcing them.

There’s something beautiful about giving creativity space to breathe.

Rather than focusing on creating more, I’m focusing on noticing more—and trusting that inspiration has a way of finding us when we slow down enough to see it.

Portfolio + Mockup Development

Even during a slower season, there is still meaningful work happening in the studio.

This summer, part of my focus will be refining and organizing work that already exists.

That means spending time on:

  • polishing pattern presentations

  • developing mockups

  • organizing mini collections

  • thoughtfully building my portfolio and visual storytelling

I love this stage of the process because it reminds me that creativity is not only about making new things—it’s also about shaping and presenting them with care.

Sometimes progress looks less like creating from scratch and more like giving existing work the attention it deserves.

Gentle Marketing + Staying Connected

You may notice a quieter rhythm from me this summer.

Fewer posts.
Less rushing.
More intention.

Rather than trying to be everywhere at once, I’m focusing on staying connected in ways that feel meaningful and sustainable.

That looks like:

  • monthly blog posts and Studio Letters

  • thoughtful updates

  • behind-the-scenes peeks

  • sharing inspiration and creative progress as it naturally unfolds

I’m learning that connection doesn’t have to be constant to be genuine.

For Shabya Reid Art, I want this space to feel less like noise and more like a quiet creative corner—somewhere encouraging, inspiring, and real.

Quality over quantity feels like the right fit for this season.

Rest, Real Life & Creative Balance

Perhaps the most important work happening this summer isn’t happening at my desk at all.

I’ve been spending time volunteering, pouring into relationships, preparing for vacation, and simply enjoying the slower rhythm of family life.

And honestly?

That matters too.

I’m building a creative business that supports life—not one that competes with it.

For a long time, I thought creativity only counted when it looked productive. But I’m beginning to understand that growth often happens quietly—in rest, reflection, and lived experiences.

The studio doesn’t disappear during these seasons.

It simply breathes.

And sometimes, stepping back is exactly what allows us to return with clearer vision and renewed inspiration.

Looking Ahead

So if summer feels a little slower around here, know that it’s intentional.

There will still be creativity.
Still be sketches.
Still be ideas quietly taking shape behind the scenes.

Just with a little more room for sunshine, family, and the beautiful rhythm of summer.

Thank you for being here and following along with this journey.

I’m looking forward to sharing what unfolds next.

With gratitude,
Shabya
